Add New Miracle

No miracles Present

Description:

Othu means Vedas. It is here that the Lord taught the Vedas to the Rishis and Devas. Hence the name Othur. Adding an adjective Thiru, the place is called Thiruvothur. Thirugnanasambandar sang 11 hyms and brought in fertility to the palm trees here. They are yielding well now-a-days. Those who eat the fruits are cured of infertility and get children and cured of diseases.

The Palm Tree: This is the tree that speaks volumes about the temple. The tree did not yield fruits at all and was infertile. The hymns of Gnanasambandar cured the tree of infertility and was converted to a female tree and is still speaking the glory for more than a century.

The other speciality of the temple is that the Nandhi is not facing the Lord but the opposite direction. While the Lord was teaching Vedas to the Devas, the Nandhi was monitoring the place so that nobody enters and create any disturbance to the teaching diverting the attention of the Sishyas. The other story is that that the Lord was encouraging Thondaiman to proceed against his enemies and sent Nandhi for his assistance.

The great speciality of the temple is that one will be able to have the dharsan of the Lord, Goddess, Lord Muruga, Lord Ganapathy and the Palm tree standing in a single place which is not possible in other temples.

Festivals: 10 days Brammotsavam with street processions and Kailash Darshan festival for Ravaneswaran on the last day, Laksha deepam (One lakh deepas) Festivals for Gnanasambandar and Sundarar, Monthly Deepa Puja for the Goddess, Abishek to the palm tree each Tamil Month, Deepavali, Tamil and English New Years day and Pongal are the days of festivity in the temple.

Accessibility: It is 33 Kms from Kancheepuram, 33 kms from Arani, 33 kms from Arcot, 34 kms from Vandavasi. Buses are available to Cheyyaru from Chennai, Thiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram, Nearest railway station is Kancheepuram and the airport Chennai.

Add New Miracle

No miracles Present

Description:

Reputation: Thirunangoor is one of the 108 Divyadesas. Thirumangai Azhwar in his Mangalasasanam sings the deity here as Ayodhya Rama. Not only those who sing the glory of this lord but even those listening reap the benefits.

The Lord fulfills the desire of a devotee chanting Vishnu Sahasranama for 48 days continuously and completes this fasting with a special puja on the last day. The Lord shows a solution to any problem of the devotee. There is no special Sannidhi for Vanpurushothaman in other Vaishnava temple. Acharya Manavala Mamunigal spent two years in the shrine in the service of the Lord. There are three Anjaneyars here, one before Ramar Sannidhi appearing in all humility covering the mouth with both hands. There will be no weeds in the Thiruparkadal; It is in the north of the temple. The Lord is very fond of the Shenbaga flowers.

General information: Puja time of the temple is 9.00 to 11.30 a.m. and 6.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. The temple lies on the Sirkali-Nagapattinam route. The visitor should get down at the Annan Perumal Koil stop and walk about 2 kms eastward. Sufficient bus conveyance is available from Sirkali, which is 9 kms from here. Nearest railway station is Sirkali and airport Trichy.

History: We have the Saivism story of Thirugnanasambandar to whom mother Parvathi fed the milk. We have in Vaishnavism a similar incident of the Lord creating a milk ocean itself for a hungry child. The Lord is Vanpurushothman. The Lord is worshipped here as Sri Rama.

Maharshi Vyakrapatha came to the garden in the temple with his child Upamanyu. He went into the garden for picking flowers leaving the child in the entrance. The child cried for the father and for milk, as it was hungry. Hearing the child crying, the Lord created a milk ocean. Mother Purushothamanayaki fed the child.

Worship: Puja time of the temple is 9.00 to 11.30 a.m. and 6.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m.

Festivals: 10 days Brahmmotsavam in the month of Panguni (March-April), Pavithra Utsav in Avani (September-October) and Garuda Sevai on the next day of New moon day in Thai (January-February) are festival days in the temple.

Miracles of Sri Vaikundanathar Temple

Add New Miracle

No miracles Present

Description:

Swathakethu, belonging to the Ikshvahu heritage in which Lord Rama was born was very righteous and loved all beings and was true devotee of the Lord. He and his wife yearned for the darshan of the Lord in his own Abode, Vaikunda.

Completing all his political duties as a king, he set out to perform penance along with his wife Damayanthi. They made a round of fire around them, stood standing looking at the Sun and continued the penance for long days and shed their mortal remains and reached Vaikunda to meet the Lord. To their disappointment, the Lord was not there. Devarishi Naradha told them that despite their severe penance, they could not see the Lord in His Abode, because they did not do great worship during their life in the earth, failed to do charities and performed no pujas for the Lord. Hence the failure. He advised them to worship Iravadeswarar in Earth on the banks of Cauvery and appeal to him for his darshan. Swethaketu and Damayanthi meticulously followed Narada’s advice. Iravadeswarar appeared before them and said that He too was waiting for the Darshan of the Lord. Udhanga Maharshi also joined the group. Lord Vishnu, along with his consorts Sri Devi and Bhudevi gave Darshan to all the four. Iravadeswarar appealed to Lord Vishnu that the spot where they had His Darshan be called Vaikunda Vinnagaram and his name Vaikundanathar. The Lord granted their boon. Mother Goddess also came to be known as Vaikundhavalli.

This is one of the 108 Divyadesas. Generally, a devotee can get into the Vaikunda above only after his/her lifetime but here is Vaikunda available readily before the devotee while he/she is alive on earth. As the Lord graces the devotees, Thirunangur is equal to His Vaikunda above. Puja time is 7.00 to 11.00 a.m. and 4.00 to 7.00 p.m

Worship: Puja time is 7.00 to 11.00 a.m. and 4.00 to 7.00 p.m.

Accessibility: Thirunangur is 7 kms south of Sirkali. One would have to take the Thirunangur-Sirkali bus and get down at Annankoil stop. Then walking a kilometer, the devotee can reach Vaikunda Vinnagaram. Temple contact No. 04364 – 275 478. Nearest Railway Station is Sirkali and the airport Chennai, Trichy.

Miracles of Kasi Viswanathar Temple - Tenkasi

Add New Miracle

No miracles Present

Description:

About seven centuries back, King Parakrama Pandian was taking a pilgrimage to Varanasi (Uthara Kasi) to worship Lord Viswanatha each year. The Lord, one day appeared in the dream of the king and directed him to construct a temple in the place naming it Tenkasi or Dakshina Kasi. While seeking a land for the construction of the temple, the King got a Nandhi statue in the Chitra River. There, he constructed a temple and installed the Lord and consecrated the temple. Till the year 1967 the Gopuram was of a flat type. In the year 1990, a beautiful tower came into being. Today, the temple looks so majestically with the 180 feet tall tower.

Those who worship in Tenkasi get the same benefit of worship undertaken in Utharakasi (Varanasi). The Durga in Tenkasi faces the west, opposite to the swami sannidhanam, while the tradition is that Goddes Durga faces the North in almost temples. The sculptures are made of single stone. The Balcony facility in the 9th tier of the gopuram is a facility to the devotees to have an aerial look of the town Tenkasi.

The construction of the Rajagopuram (tower) was inaugurated by Parakrama Pandian in AD 1440 and was completed in the year 1505. The Gopuram caught fire in 1824 and was in a bad condition from 1826 to 1966. Then the renovation began and was completed in the year 1990.

The Rajagopuram is 180 feet tall and is a masterpiece of aesthetic beauty. A 2-5 feet wide pathway is also provided in the tower in the 9th tier to have an aerial look of Tenkasi. One enjoys the pleasure of walking on the sky while making a round in the tower.

Festivals: 10 days Masi Magam festival (Feb-March), Navarathri (Sept-Oct), Aipasi Wedding festival (Thirukalyanam in Oct-Nov.),Karthikai Rudra Deepam, Margazhi Thiruvadhirai, Thai Amavasya, each full moon day, Kruthika Star day, Ganesh Chaturthi, Each first day of Tamil months are the important holy days when special pujas are performed. There will be huge crowd in the temple these days.

Accessibility: Tenkasi is 55 Kms from Tirunelveli, 105 Km from Tuticorin, 136 Km from Kanyakumari and 150 Km from Madurai. Tenkasi is connected with almost important towns and cities of Tamilnadu by road. The nearest railway station is Tenkasi and the nearest airport Thiruvananthapuram.

Miracles of Sri Oppiliappan Temple

Add New Miracle

No miracles Present

Description:

Prayer Commitment: People take up fasting called Shravana Vrat and offer Nivedhana to Lord prepared without salt. This is a special undertaking in this temple.

Thulabaram as in Guruvayoor is another undertaking by devotees. They offer coconuts, jaggery, sugar crystals, rope, butter, pulse varieties, currency in coins to the lord equivalent to their weight. Devotees also offer Tulsi Garlands, abishek, perform the wedding festival, also offer their hair, conduct ear boring ceremony etc. The rich offer Aannadhanam (feeding the visitors) and also donations for the maintenance of the pujas and renovations.

Shravana Deepam (lighting), Shravana fasting: Devotees throng in huge numbers during the Shravana days of all months, bathe in the temple tank, worship him and have dharshan of three lights at about 11.00 a.m. Those who carry the lamps also foretell what is good in store for the devotees. Shravana Fasting can be done either by coming to the temple or even by being in their house. Shravana fasting is a fasting and ending it with a dish prepared without salt. Any preparation with salt should not be taken into the temple beyond the Garuda shrine. All nivedhana to the Lord also is offered without salt only.

Reputation: The Lord is in a standing position facing east, while Mother Nachiar is in sitting position facing north. Rishi Markandeya is seen in the sanctum sanatorium as offering a maiden in marriage. The Lord gave darshan to Nammalvar in five forms, Ponnappan, Maniappan, Muthappan, Ennappan and Thiruvinnagarappan as named by the Alwar in his Mangalasasanam. The Lord also bears the namesThanniharilla Appan (meaning none equal to him) Sri Venkatachalapathy. There is no separate shrine for Mother who is just by the Lord Himself.

The shrine for Vedanta Desika is just out of the sanctum sanatorium. Garuda, Cauvery, Darma Devata, Markandeya had the luck of having Lord’s dharshan in this temple. This temple is also celebrated as Markandeya Kshetram.

History: Bhoomadevi is the daughter of Muni Markandeya. Very young in age. The Muni was in search of a bridegroom for her. The Lord came to him in the guise of an aged man and sought Bhoomadevi’s hands. Markandeya pointed out his age to him but the Lord (old man) insisted his demand. The Rishi said that his daughter did not know even how to cook and the salt may go more or less which may cause anger against his daughter. Then the Rishi prayed to the Lord to relieve him from the confusion. A voice from the sky came, "let your daughter cook without food and that would suffice to me. Are you now ready to give your daughter to me". The Muni understood that the caller was none other than the Lord himself… Markandeya gave his daughter Bhumadevi to the Lord in the wedding that followed. This is the shrine, where the Lord began his life with Bhumadevi.

Festivals: The prarthana golden chariot festival is popular among the devotees and that takes place almost daily at the temple. The outer prahara is at present uncovered, making it difficult to conduct the festival during rainy season.

Miracles of Sri Trivikramaswamy Temple

Add New Miracle

No miracles Present

Description:

Prayer commitments: Devotees offer new clothing to the Lord, Offer Tulsi Garland, light ghee lamps, offer abishek to Mother Goddess in turmeric water, kumkum abishek to the Durga and feed the visiting devotees.

Speciality: With a view to teach a lesson to a king proud of his high charitable nature, Lord Vishnu came to earth in the form of a dwarf. He is seen in the temple with his left leg measuring the sky and the earth by the right leg. Generally, the Lord is seen in all the temples holding his wheel in the right hand and the conch in the left. In Thirukovilur temple, Lord Trivikrama is holding them vice versa. It is said that in his delight to see the king reformed embraced him. It should be understood that the Lord graces the devotee with wisdom. One of his right hands looks as if asking Mahabali for the land for the third step. The body of the Lord is of wood. In no shrine the Lord is so tall in a standing position as in Thirukovilur.

Reputation of the Shrine: The Lord is known as Ulagalanda Nathar meaning, "He measured the worlds in three steps. The Lord of the shrine is also known as Venugopalan. The presiding deity is made of wood. In no other shrine, the Lord is as tall as in Thirukovilur. Against the known tradition, the Lord holds the wheel in the left hand and the conch in the right.

Thirukovilur is one of the celebrated 108 Divyadesas and is significant in the Nadunadu region. The tower is 192 feet tall and is the third biggest in Tamilnadu. Sukra, the teacher of the demon king has a temple here.

he celebrated Nalayira Divya Prabandam (4000 songs in praise of Lord Vishnu and in praise of Sage Ramanuja) sung in praise of the Lord by the twelve Azhwars was born in this holy soil only. Poigai Azhawar, Boothathazhwar and Peyazhwar are the great devotees opening the first songs in the volume.

Mahabali, the King of Asuras was noted for charitable character. Was proud of his reputation and wished that none should excel him in the fame. He pperformed a great Yagna led by his Guru Sukra. Lord Vishnu came to the spot in the guise of a dwarf and demanded three steps of land by his feet. Sukracharya recognized the dwarf as Lord Vishnu himself. He cautioned his disciple to deny the demand, but Bali was determined to offer the demand. The dwarf suddenly grew tall touching the sky and measured the earth by one step and the sky by the second and asked for the third as no third land was left to be given. Bali, unhesitatingly offered his head saying that he has nothing else than his head. Sukra tried to prevent Bali from giving dhan and blocked the vessel by which he has to pour the water confirming his offer.
Miracles of Tryambakeshwar Temple

Add New Miracle

No miracles Present

Description:

Legend has it that sage Gowtama resided on the Brahmagiri hill here with his wife Ahalya, and seeing his unflinching devotion received a boon from Varuna - a bottomless pit from which he received an inexhaustible supply of foodgrains. This of course enraged other sages who conspired for a cow to enter his granary, and caused it to die as Gowtama attempted to ward it off with a bunch of Darbha grass. Because of this misfortune Gowtama therefore worshipped Shiva, to invoke the Goddess Ganga down to his hermitage to purify the premises. Ganga came down as Godavari, and Shiva took up an abode here in the form of Tryambaka. Interestingly, locals refer to the river here as Ganga and not as Godavari.

Legend has it that Brahma and Vishnu searched in vain to discover the origin of Shiva who manifested himself as a cosmic column of fire. Brahma lied that he had seen the top of the column of fire, and was hence cursed that he would not be worshipped on earth. In turn Brahma cursed Shiva that he would be pushed underground. Accordingly, Shiva came down under the Brahmagiri hill in the form of Tryambakeshwar. The shrine enjoyed the patronage of the Peshwas.

The Nagara style of architecture is what typifies this temple made of black stone. It is enclosed in a spacious courtyard and the sanctum (internally a square and externally a stellar structure) houses a small Shivalingam - Tryambaka. The sanctum is crowned with a graceful tower ,a giant amalaka and a golden kalasha.

Antiquity: This is an ancient shrine, but what we see today built by the Peshwa Balaji Bajirao in mid 18th century. This great JyotirLinga on the banks of Gautami has a unique form. The Lord in this temple’s Grabhagriha is not worshipped with Abhisheka with water (Jalahari) unlike others. There is just a bottom part of the pounding stone (Ukhali), instead, like a hole. In that hole there are three Lingas shaped like the Thumbs. Hence Tryambakeshwara. Of these three Lingas, the Linga of Mahesha has a constant shower of water from an orifice above. It is a natural source of water coming down as Abhisheka for the Lord.

The temple was first built with palm leaves which later grew into a stone construction. The temple in Uvari is very popular as even leprosy is cured here by the blessisngs of the Lord.

Miracles of Sri Nellayappar Temple – Tirunelveli

Add New Miracle

No miracles Present

Description:

Antiquity: The temple dates back to 700 AD and has been sung by the Saivite saint Tirugnana sambandar. Supposedly there were two distinct temples for Shiva and his consort both built by the Pandyan kings and the Sangili Mandapam linking these two were built in the 17th centuries. The towers also date back to early 17th century. There are inscriptions dating all the way back to 950 AD in the temple.

Architecture: Vast in area, this temple never ceases to surprise visitors for the wealth of detail it has to offer. The musical pillars in the Mani Mandapam which produce sound in various pitches when struck (7th century AD by Nindrasir Nedumaran or Koon Pandyan), the Somavara Mandapam, the 1000 pillared hall, and the Tamra sabha with intricate wood work, and the Vasantha Mandapam are some of the noteworthy points in this temple. Lifelike sculptures adorn several of the mandapams in the temple, noteworthy ones being in the Sangili Mandapam which links the temples of Nellaiappar and Kantimathi in this vast temple complex.

Tamra Sabhai: The Copper Hall of Dance is a brilliant work of art, and is housed within the inner precincts of the temple. On the occasion of Arudra Darisanam (occuring in the Tamil month of Margazhi - Dec 15 - Jan 15), the images of Nataraja and Sivakami are housed here, and elaborate worship protocols are observed during the enactment of the Cosmic Dance of Shiva. A shrine to Sandana Sabhapati (adorned with sandal paste) is located right behind the Tamra Sabha and to a visitor walking towards the Tamra Sabha, the combination of these, i.e. the vision of Sandana Sabhapati seen through the Tamra Sabha presents a brilliant spectacle. There is yet another shrine to Nataraja here, the Periya Sabhapati shrine. Religious services are carried out here on special occasions, and this festival idol is never moved from this shrine.

Festivals: Navaratri, Tirukkalyanam in Aippasi, (Oct 15 - Nov 15) and Arudra Darisanam are some of the important festivals here. Arudra Darisanam attracts huge crowds here. The temple charriot is a massive one, second supposedly only to Tiruvarur. The Bhrammotsavam here lasts for an extended period of time during the Tamil month of Aani (June 15 - July 15).

Accessibility: The temple is just 1.05 km from the Tirunelveli railway junction. Tirunelveli is linked by road and rail with all parts of Tamilnadu with adequate buses and trains at reasonable intervals both day and night. The nearest railway station is Tirunelveli Junction and airports Madurai and Thiruvananthapuram.

Near By Attraction: Courtallam waterfalls and Kutraleeswarar Temple

Famous For: It is one of the famous Tamil Nadu temples, deep in tradition and history and also known for its musical pillars and brilliant sculptural splendours

Description:

The Bhagawati temple at Kodungallur is of great renown throughout the state of Kerala. Kodungallur situated on the west coast, was once a great port of the Chera rulers of Tamilnadu, It was known by the Greek as the musris. Tiruvanchikkulam, now a suburb of Kodungallur was a center of great historic significance during the chera period. Cheran Senguttuvan is said to have built the temple to Kannagi - a manifestation of Kaali or Kotravai or Durga, here (Silappadikaaram).

It is believed to have been a Shiva temple originally, as worship is offered first to Shiva before being offered to Bhagawati, and there is a mandapam in front of the shiva shrine, and there is none infront of Bhagawatis. The image of Bhagawati is believed to have been carved out of a jack fruit three. The face of the image is covered with a mask, and the image is decorated with several pieces of jewellary. This image is believed to be a personification of Kali, who had killed the demon Daaruka. Daaruka is said to have worshipped Bhrama, and harassed the devas. The goddesses created Bhramani, Vaishnavi, Maheswari, Kaumari, Varahi and Indrani from Bhrama, vishnu, Mahadeva, Kumara, Yama and Indra, and they were defeated by Daaruka, however Shiva created Kaali and she killed Daaruka. The image of Kali faces east.

Antiquity: Makara Sankranti brings with it 4 days of colorful fanfare, with processions twice a day on elephants to the accompaniment of music, fireworks. The final day's procession is marked by the accompaniment of several women carrying plates of rice and coconut. In fact, the centermost entity in the procession, is a plate containing these offerings, on an elephant. A grand reception os offered to this procession when it reaches the temple. The procession rleaves from the original location of the Bhagawati temple, (the Kurumbayamma shrine in Kodungallur).

Festivals: The festivals of significance at Kodungallur are Makara Sankaranti and the Bharani Festival.
